Welcome back to Gorilla Radio’s Home Edition, recorded June 10th and 12th, 2021

After the shock, fear, and uncertainty had subsided somewhat, benefits of the pandemic soon became apparent. Who didn’t marvel in those early days at the serene stillness; the peace and quietude settling over the cites like a muffling snowfall; surprising commuters and putting a halt to our frantic everyday? And didn’t the stars seem closer; the air fresher? And, wasn’t there too an unaccustomed moment to hear ones thoughts; to take time to think?

Bestselling, award-winning Canadian author J.B. MacKinnon’s first book, ‘The 100-Mile Diet’, (co-written with Alisa Smith) was an international sensation, catalyzing the locavore movement. He followed that with ‘The Once and Future World: Nature As It Was, As It Is, As It Could Be’, the poignant examination of Nature’s past, the parlous anthropocene present, and our possible futures. His latest is ‘The Day the World Stops Shopping‘ a book he says began as a thought experiment and work of “imaginative reporting” that World events caught up with.

And; the result of last month’s Syrian presidential election was hardly surprising. The besieged country’s leader Bashar al-Assad won by a margin poll-watching cliches like “landslide victory” can’t do justice. Equally unsurprising was the Western press and “World Community” reaction to that victory.

Eva Bartlett is an independent Canadian journalist and activist who has lived in and reported extensively from Syria over the last decade. She’s been one of the few Western witnesses to the destruction of war from where the missiles and bombs land, and one of even fewer to fix properly the blame on those responsible for it. Eva was in Syria again witnessing both the reelection of Assad, and widespread celebration of national survival.

Last week the Trudeau government announced Canada would provide refuge for members of the White Helmets and their families. The announcement came as a still unknown number of the group were evacuating southern Syria via the Occupied Golan and Israel.

Though Canada’s minister of foreign affairs says she supports the group whole-heartedly, critics charge the Syria Civil Defence or White Helmets “humanitarian workers” work with and are intrinsically allied to al Qaeda, primarily through its Syria-based spin-off Jabhat Al-Nusra.

Eva Bartlett is an independent Canadian journalist and activist who has lived in and reported from Gaza and Syria over the last decade.

She has been one of the few Western witnesses of the destruction of war from where Western missiles and bombs land, and one of even fewer to fix properly the responsibility on those firing and dropping them. Eva is recently returned from her eighth foray into Syria.

And; buoyed perhaps by his early days North Korean diplomatic success, Donald Trump has again resorted to Twitter to launch a bellicose attack against Iran, making, as he did against Kim Jong Un, thinly veiled threats of nuclear annihilation. But, Iran is not Korea, and in the context of a middle east already aflame, the American president may be painting himself into a corner leading to yet another war.

David Swanson is a peace and political justice activist, journalist, radio host, and author whose book titles include: ‘War No More: The Case for Abolition,’ ‘When the World Outlawed War,’ ‘War Is a Lie,’ and ‘The Military Industrial Complex at 50’ among others. Though almost everyone claims to love animals many of us still eat them, while most try not to think too much about the terrible treatment humans mete out to our fellow Earthlings. But beyond vegetarianism, veganism, and rescue pet adoption what’s a compassionate person to do?

Primates of the Animal Protection Party of Canada and their allies have brought this year’s Animal Advocacy Camp to Victoria to explore just that. The ACC takes place this April 14th at Camosun College’s Gibson Auditorium and features a number of keynote speakers covering a variety of topics. Tayler Zavitz is one of those and she’ll present, ‘Empathy as Terrorism? The Criminalization of Animal Activism in Canada’.

Tayler’s a PhD candidate at UVic’s Department of Sociology whose research focus is the repression of animal activism and the criminalization of dissent in Canada. She holds degrees in Political Science and Critical Sociology, (with a focus on Critical Animal Studies) and is a current student scholar with the brand new, Animals & Society Research Initiative at the University of Victoria. She’s also a reviewer for the Journal for Critical Animal Studies.

And; Monday morning, missiles again flew into Syria, killing at least seven and wounding scores more. Though they didn’t admit responsibility, Israel is implicated. Merely the latest in a series of unanswered military assaults on its neighbour, this latest comes at a critical point in Syria’s long and bitter war.

Over the weekend, US president Donald Trump promised “action” in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack against civilians in Douma, the last stronghold of pro-jihadist groups in besieged Eastern Ghouta. And, while Trump and his allies in NATO condemn without benefit of investigation Bashar al-Assad’s government, Russia has issued its own Red Line, saying should any Russians in Syria come under fire Moscow will consider that an act of war.

Eva is currently preparing for another foray into Syria, even as Washington’s war drum beats louder.

To say Gaza City and the Gaza Strip, that thin slice of remnant Palestine walled on three sides by Israel and Egypt, patrolled with deadly seriousness from the sea, and whose airspace is entirely controlled by Israel’s air force, is in crisis is labouring the obvious.

Targeted by a ruthless campaign of managed starvation by Israel, the so-called “Gaza Diet” has ensured an entire generation of children will be stunted physically and intellectually, while deliberate and repeated attacks by Israel’s military guarantee emotional trauma.

But, things in Gaza have taken a dramatic turn for the worse since political turmoil in neighbouring Egypt closed the Rafah border, and the military Junta there began a program of systematic destruction of the tunnels that had supplied Gaza with the necessities of life Israel’s illegal embargo routinely denies.

Eva Bartlett landed in Gaza with one of the only Gaza Boats able to break Israel’s blockade in 2008. She stayed on with the International Solidarity Movement, or ISM, as an accompanier in time to suffer the horrific Cast Lead bombardment, and to bear witness daily to Gazans’ tribulations in their homes and streets, in the farmers’ fields, and on the fishers’ boats, subject to the caprices of Israel’s naval forces. Eva will be speaking here this Wednesday November 27th at the University of Victoria as part of ‘Gaza in Crisis: Eyewitness Reports’.

And; Oak Bay council recently decided to launch an “experimental” deer culling program aimed at “controlling” urban deer. Predictably, the decision is controversial, and one group opposed to the scheme held demonstrations in Oak Bay over the weekend. DeerSafeVictoria says the cull plan is cruel, and will ultimately prove ineffective. I went down to the demonstration to talk to some of the people involved.
