Jessep, in the film ‘A Few Good Men,’ lays out what has become in the real world a real doctrine for the Bill O’Reillys and his Scream TV adherents.
The colonel says, “You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall.”
It’s the classic iteration of the “rough,” but not necessarily good men George Orwell invoked when he reportedly said, “We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.” But what happens when those rough men get too rough? And what happens when the violence they visit is visited not upon those others, but upon us?
