Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Yves Engler, Joe Emersberger January 24, 2024

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded January 24th, 2024

Monday Canada’s military aided in the bombing of Yemen. The Department of National Defence says Canada and a coalition of like-minded nations “support” the Anglo-American bombing of the country the CIA World Factbook says suffers, “massive poverty, food insecurity, unemployment [and] high inflation“. Yemen is also one of the poorest places on the planet, and has been victim to a long-running regime-change campaign sponsored by the same Anglo-American Axis powers now bombing it. All factors making it a sterling candidate for Canadian political – and military – meddling.

According to my first guest, Canada has contributed to the undermining and overthrowing of more than twenty separate national governments since the middle of the last century; all of them in countries that dared declare political and economic sovereignty.

Yves Engler is a Montreal-based political activist and the author of twelve books, mostly detailing the dark dealings of Canada’s foreign policy elite. Make that thirteen titles as of next week, when Baraka Books releases Yves latest, co-authored with Owen Schalk, ‘Canada’s Long Fight Against Democracy‘. Yves is also a prolific essayist, whose writing appears across the internet and at his website, YvesEngler.com where his most recent piece, ‘When ‘leftists’ use ‘antisemitism’ smears to weaken Palestinian solidarity’ is featured.

Yves Engler in the first half.

And; on January 7th, Ecuadorian gang boss, Adolfo Macías escaped from prison, embarrassing the recently elected “tough on crime” president, Daniel Noboa. Since then, para-military raids and assassinations of public figures – one notably killed on live television – have ping-ponged, marking an escalation of violence that at first paralyzed, and continues to terrorize the South American nation.

Joe Emersberger is a Canadian-Ecuadorian engineer, journalist, and co-author with Justin Podur of the book, ‘Extraordinary Threat: The US Empire, the Media and 20 Years of Coup Attempts in Venezuela‘. Joe’s many articles focusing on Western media coverage of the Americas can be found at FAIR.org, CounterPunch, and Telesur English among other places.

Joe Emersberger and the chaotic descent of Latin America’s once “most peaceful” nation in the second half.

But first, Yves Engler and Canada’s regime-change cowboys high in the saddle over Yemen.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Ken Stone, Selam Gebremeskel January 10, 2024

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded January 10th, 2024

Listen. Hear.

Approaching 100 days of Israel’s bombing of civilians in Gaza, (and its kidnap and murder campaign in the West Bank) Britain’s newest Foreign Minister, David Cameron says he’s worried Israel may have committed some breaches of international law. Responding to questions from the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, the former UK PM admitted to “deep concern” over Israel’s methods, but said he was reassured by his government’s legal advisors Israel has exhibited a “…commitment, the capability and the compliance” to international law in Gaza. Though the issue of Israel’s assassination of foreign nationals in neighbouring countries wasn’t broached, that too presumably fails to meet Britain’s threshold for international criminality.

Ken Stone is an activist and author working for peace with the Syria Support Movement International and Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War. His book, ‘Defiant Syria: Dispatches from the Second International Tour of Peace to Syria’ is a compilation of his dispatches from his 2016 visit.

Ken Stone in the first half.

And; while Israel’s three months-long martial rampage in Gaza has knocked many other stories of desperation from the news cycle to be fair, Ethiopia’s civil war and the dismal disappointment of the Pretoria agreement for Tigrayans was long-forgotten long before October 7th.
Selamawit Gebremeskel is an Ethiopian emigre who has lived in Canada for nearly thirty years. Now a health care professional in Victoria, she has relatives in Tigray who were caught up in the war the Abiy government waged against its civilians, and are now suffering the peace accord Addis Ababa fails to honour.

Selam and the GVTRRS community invite Victorians to join them February 3rd at the Oddfellows Lodge, down town Victoria, for a special evening titled “Feast to Fight Famine“, a dinner fundraiser focused on delivering much-needed support to Tigrayan families suffering from the post-war famine.

Selamawit Gebremeskel and Ethiopia’s continuing struggle in the second half.

But first, Ken Stone and Israel’s “deeply concerning” behaviour.

Gorilla Radio with Kathy Kelly, Victoria Gaza Solidarity Rally & March November 22, 2023

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded November 22nd, 2023

This assault being waged against human decency in Palestine is a test; a test to gauge how much atrocity we watching will countenance. What we’ve allowed befall others in Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Ukraine, and elsewhere has metastasized, becoming finally the full-blown horror of Gaza. And it’s a horror that will, if we allow it continue over there, in due course return to be visited upon us as well.
So, why is it allowed time and again? And, who profits this belittlement of humanity?

Kathy Kelly is a long-time peace and justice activist, essayist, author, and recipient of numerous awards for her peace service, including multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace prize. Kathy’s book titles include, ‘Prisoners on Purpose: a Peacemakers Guide to Jails and Prison,’ and ‘Other Lands Have Dreams: from Baghdad to Pekin Prison.’

These days she’s serving as Board President at World BEYOND War, where among other things, she’s been busy co-coordinating the November 2023 Merchants of Death War Crimes Tribunal. The Tribunal launched Sunday, November 12, with the first segment examining the wanton and repeated criminality of the destruction of Gaza.

Kathy Kelly in the first half.

And; for the last six weeks, millions have gathered in cities and towns across the World to express their collective outrage at what is happening right now in Palestine, and in an effort to pressure their respective governments to demand Israel stop its indefensible destruction of Gaza and its people. Victoria, British Columbia is no different, where every week since Israel’s onslaught began citizens have come to the Legislative Buildings, seat of the provincial government, to raise their voices against the statuary and granite facades in hopes of moving their representatives.

Soundscapes from the Palestine solidarity manifestations in the second half.

But first, Kathy Kelly and trying the profiteers at 2023’s Merchants of Death War Crimes Tribunal.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Ramzy Baroud, Azza Rojbi April 16, 2022

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded March 16th, 2022.

Israeli forces stormed Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque during Friday prayers last week. It was the culmination of attacks against Palestinians in towns, villages, and cities across the West Bank during Ramadan. Palestinian attacks within Israel since the beginning of the holy fasting month have too increased. As of writing, thirty people are dead on both sides, and it’s feared this could be a prelude to a larger conflict. Mustafa Barghouti, secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative says the confrontations over these two weeks “could become a wide-ranging Intifada.”

Last year, military raids against worshipers in Al-Aqsa escalated to an eleven day conflict that included Israel’s air force bombing Gaza killing hundreds, including at least sixty-five children.

Dr. Ramzy Baroud is a journalist, author, and editor of The Palestine Chronicle at PalestineChroncile.com. His book titles include, ‘My Father Was a Freedom Fighter’, ‘The Last Earth: A Palestinian Story’, ‘These Chains Will Be Broken: Palestinian Stories of Struggle and Defiance in Israeli Prisons,’ and his latest, co-edited with Ilan Pappé, ‘Our Vision for Liberation: Engaged Palestinian Leaders and Intellectuals Speak Out.’ Ramzy’s articles also appear across the internet and at his website, RamzyBaroud.net, where I found his recent piece, ‘Gaza’s Forthcoming Crisis Might Be Worse than Anything We Have Ever Seen.’

Ramzy Baroud in the first half.

And; April begins the eighth year of the World’s most dire humanitarian disaster, the asymmetrical conflict in Yemen. There, backed by western nations, Saudi Arabia has led a coalition of wealthy Arab states in a protracted war that has cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians; and threatens millions more.

Azza Rojbi is a social justice and anti-racism activist, author, and secretary of Mobilization Against War & Occupation, Vancouver’s anti-war coalition. She’s also with the Canada-wide #CanadaStopArmingSaudi campaign against this country’s contribution to the suffering in Yemen, and works in solidarity with Latin America movements, including being a coordinator with Friends of Cuba Against the U.S. Blockade. Azza too serves on the Editorial Board of the Fire This Time Newspaper. Azza Rojbi’s 2019 book, ‘U.S. & Saudi War on the People of Yemen’ is published by Battle of Ideas Press.

Azza Rojbi and Canada feeding the fire of war in Yemen in the second half.

But first, Ramzy Baroud and Gaza without water.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Colin Stuart, Glenn Michalchuk April 2, 2022

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded April 2nd, 2022

Mid-March marks the anniversary of what’s been called the World’s greatest humanitarian crisis. While that somber appellative may be moot, the war against Yemen continues into its eighth year with exactly the same horror and heartbreak you’ve seen amply depicted coming from Ukraine these past weeks – and rightly so – the difference though being the dearth of media coverage of Yemeni suffering. Pictures of schools and hospitals bombed, or the stories of parents and children maimed, killed, and rendered homeless still find little purchase in Canadian media.

But just because Canada’s business, government, and media elite ignore the suffering of those in that benighted place does not mean Canadians don’t care. Last week, members of the Victoria Peace Coalition took part in the Canada-Wide Peace and Justice Network event, Canada Stop Arming Saudi Arabia. It’s an effort to end Canada’s role in “fueling the war in Yemen”, as the United Nations has repeatedly charged.

Colin Stuart is with the Victoria Peace Coalition, and is a supporter too of the Canadian Friends Service Committee, and a serving board member of World Beyond War.

Colin Stuart in the first half.

And; the wars in Yemen and Ukraine are not the only ways Canada’s new self-understanding as a ‘warrior nation’ manifest. Right here at home the militarization of the nation is moving forward on the double. Last week, the Trudeau government, newly reinforced by the party formerly known as the New Democratic Party, announced it would go ahead with its plan to spend billions on Lockheed Martin’s F-35 attack jet. The purchase guarantees monies needed for the health and well-being of Canadians will instead be devoted to enriching one of the World’s biggest purveyors of death and misery – for generations to come. And, it couldn’t come at a worse time.

Glenn Michalchuk is chair of Peace Alliance Winnipeg. He’s been active in the peace movement going all the way back to the era of Ronald Reagan’s Dirty Wars in Latin America.

Glenn Michalchuk and Canada becoming a force against the people internationally in the second half.

But first, Colin Stuart and Canada’s part in Yemen’s “forgotten war”.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, David Adler, Ken Stone February 11th, 2021

Welcome to Gorilla Radio’s Home Edition recorded on the dates, February 4th and 9th, 2021.

Ecuador’s presidential election is scheduled for February 7th, just three days from now; but with contender, Andres Arauz forecast to win big, the government is claiming his party has contravened National Electoral Council rules and could be disqualified. Arauz has promised to continue the Citizen’s Revolution movement begun by his mentor, Raphael Correa and betrayed by Correa’s former vice-president, and current outgoing president, Lenin Moreno.

David Adler is a scholar, political economist, and first General Coordinator of Progressive International, a new organization saying, “It is time for progressives of the world to unite.” Adler is in Ecuador now with a Progressive International elections monitoring contingency.

David Adler in the first half.

And; March 1st, hearings will resume in the extradition trial of Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei executive arrested in Vancouver in December of 2018 and still held under house-arrest in that city. Meng is also daughter to the founder and CEO of the Chinese tech. giant whose company has been a focus of the growing trade war between the World’s two greatest economies. Meng’s arrest has thrust Canada into the middle of that global imbroglio, threatening trade relations and damaging the country’s reputation as a “rule of law” nation.

Ken Stone is a long-time antiwar activist, serving as an executive member of both the Syria Solidarity Movement and Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War. Ken and the Hamilton Coalition are joining forces with online investigative journalism site, The Canada Files to continue the Cross-Canada FREE MENG WANZOU campaign.

Ken Stone on “The arrest of Meng Wanzhou & the New Cold War on China” in the second half.

But first up, David Adler and Progressive International mobilizing its mission in Ecuador.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, David Rovics, David Swanson January 28th, 2021

Welcome back to Gorilla Radio’s Home Edition, recorded on the dates, January 25th and 26th, 2021.

And welcome to the dawning of, if not the Age of Aquarius, then the beginning of the end of the Trump Epoch. Of course, Joe Biden would have this moment be the start of his “Era”, but who out there believes there’s time enough left for that? At any rate, it is an opportunity for America to assess where it is and wants to be, and to perhaps finally give policy a chance.

David Rovics describes himself as a broadcaster, musician, blogger, and author of the novel, ‘A Busker’s Adventures’; but he is too a rabble-rousing, anarcho-socialist type, whose frequent essays on political issues and societal observation are featured at CounterPunch and Dissident Voice.org, among other places. David is also a husband and parent, alt-media maven, resident of the famously restive Portland, Oregon, and man with a special talent for pissing people off. His weekly program, This Week with David Rovics can be found through his website, DavidRovics.com.

David Rovics in the first half.

And; it’s not only the raging grease fire Trump left burning in America’s kitchen Biden needs addressing, there’s also the problem with the neighbours  to be dealt with. While some may fondly remember the Obama years, those overseas recall Joe riding shotgun on an interventionist foreign policy nightmare, the disastrous effects of which are still roiling the World beyond Pennsylvania Avenue.

David Swanson is an author, activist, journalist, and broadcaster. He’s the executive director of World BEYOND War, campaign coordinator for RootsAction.org, and a past Nobel Peace Prize Nominee whose book titles include: ‘War Is A Lie’, ‘When the World Outlawed War’, and ‘Leaving WWII Behind’. David blogs at DavidSwanson.org and WarIsACrime.org, and he’s the host of Talk Nation Radio. In his recent article, ‘Pope’s Words to Biden in Open Letter‘ Swanson puts the Pontiff in Catholic president, Biden’s policy equation.

David Swanson and preempting a third term of American intervention in the second half.

But first, David Rovics and the dangers of making sense in a post-sensical America.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Yves Engler October 9, 2020

Welcome to Gorilla Radio’s continuing ‘Home Edition’, not broadcast live, but recorded on this date, October 9th, 2020.

In reacting to times of extreme societal stress there are two options: People can come together; or things can be pulled apart. The latter is exemplified by Canadian writer, Naomi Klein’s seminal work, The Shock Doctrine, and by the ominously interpreted phrase, “never let a good crisis go to waste.”

Right now, as the global pandemic wrecks havoc on individual lives and economies, the Israeli lobby is clearly not using the opportunity to mend fences, but is instead taking advantage of the media cover the crisis affords to attack perceived foes and further silence critics of Israel’s egregious Palestine occupation.

Yves Engler is a Montréal-based activist, essayist, and author whose articles appear at Ricochet, The Palestine Chronicle, and at his site, YvesEngler.com among other places. The latest of his 11 published titles is, ‘House of Mirrors — Justin Trudeau’s Foreign Policy’.

Today, Yves Engler and the burgeoning blowback for the Israel Lobby coming.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Anthony Fenton, Kim Ives, Janine Bandcroft August 16th, 2018

The current imbroglio between allies Canada and Saudi Arabia obscures somewhat the role our peace-loving nation has played in the ongoing Saudi-led war against Yemen.

Essentially, we have busily beavered away, allowing “defense” contracts precipitating the outrages visited on the people there.

In 2016, I spoke with Canadian academic, Anthony Fenton about Canada’s deals with the Saudi’s. Anthony is an independent researcher, former journalist, author, and PhD candidate studying the political economy of Canada-Gulf Cooperation Council, or GCC relations.

His many articles have been featured by the Asia Times Online, The Dominion, Foreign Policy in Focus, Inter Press Service News, Mother Jones, and Upside Down World, and he co-authored, with Yves Engler, ‘Canada in Haiti: Waging War on the Poor Majority’.

Anthony Fenton in the first half.

And; Monday the National Police of Haiti announced the launch of the operation ‘Boukle Lari a’, whose stated mission is “to ensure the safety of the population and tourists…”. The PNH promise it’s temporary, designed just to extend through the “last two weeks of the summer season”, but recent political unrest in the city may be more behind the action, which includes nighttime curfews, than protecting visitors to the Caribbean island nation.

A cynic might even surmise, it all has more to do with the increasingly popular disenchantment with President Jovenel Moïse and his young administration’s rule.

Kim Ives is the founding editor of Haiti Liberté, a weekly newspaper published in French, Kreyol, and English. He also hosts, with Marquez Osson, the WBAI Radio broad/webcast Haitian news program, Lanbi, named for the conch shell used to rally freedom-fighting enslaved Africans in Haiti.

Kim Ives and a volcanic explosion of anger and violence building in Haiti in the second half.

And; Victoria-based activist and CFUV Radio broadcaster at-large, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour with the Left Coast Events Bulletin and some of the good things to be gotten up to in and around our town in the coming week. But first, Anthony Fenton and Canada’s enabling of Saudi Arabia’s Long War in Yemen.
